Our Vision

Intent

History allows Children to see the world clearly. Through their work in History, children develop a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s Past and that of the wide world which helps to stimulate pupil’s curiosity to know more about the past. They are encouraged to question and critically weigh evidence and sources to develop a perspective on the world. At Monksdown we want to equip our pupils with the knowledge and skills to understand the complexities of people’s lives, change in the world and the societies around them. We believe that History is vital in providing children with the understanding of how the past impacts their future. In order for them to fully understand the world they live in, they need to know the events and actions that have led them to now. The core of History at Monksdown Primary is to promote children’s interests and curiosity into how the past informs the present and to develop a life-long appreciation for the rich tapestry of the history of the world around us.

 

Implementation

History at Monksdown Primary is delivered using a rich broad and balanced curriculum using the Lancashire Curriculum as a framework to build upon. This allows experiences to be planned and taught through a series of topics. Monksdown Primary bases the teaching of History on the National Curriculum objectives which separates learning into the Key Stages.

The subject lead organises the HIstory curriculum through a Long Term Plan from the Lancashire Curriculum with carefully sequences units from years 1-6. These build on the prior learning from previous year groups and develop skills ensuring progression including from EYFS understanding the world. Subjects leaders review and revise Medium Term Plans (taken from the LTP) and for each topic to support their planning and teaching of the History curriculum. The Subject Leader is responsible for supporting staff in planning and delivering a high-quality geography curriculum by providing planning support, lesson feedback, book looks and other CPD.

 

Impact

Our curriculum at Monksdown aims to allow children to

  • know and understand the history of these islands as a coherent, chronological narrative, from the earliest times to the present day: how people’s lives have shaped this nation and how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world
  • know and understand significant aspects of the history of the wider world: the nature of ancient civilisations; the expansion and dissolution of empires; characteristic features of past non-European societies; achievements and follies of mankind
  • gain and deploy a historically grounded understanding of abstract terms.
  • understand historical concepts such as continuity and change, cause and consequence, similarity, difference and significance, and use them to make connections, draw contrasts, analyse trends, frame historically-valid questions and create their own structured accounts, including written narratives and analyses
  • understand the methods of historical enquiry, including how evidence is used rigorously to make historical claims, and discern how and why contrasting arguments and interpretations of the past have been constructed
