Adaptations to the Curriculum for Pupils with SEND (Curriculum Statements)
Our Vision
Languages are an essential part of a broad, balanced curriculum. Not only do they provide an opportunity to communicate more effectively with others; they also help children to understand what it is to be a global citizen. This includes the importance of tolerance and understanding, which is crucial knowledge in today’s world. It helps to equip pupils with the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. It encourages pupils to appreciate and celebrate difference. The language curriculum also provides the foundation for learning further languages. It should enable pupils to study and work in other countries. In doing this, the language curriculum has a potentially positive impact on business and the economy.
Here at Monksdown, we are fortunate to share a multilingual community and take every opportunity to share in the vibrant languages that exist within our families. We do this through everyday mutual respect of all cultural aspects of language and special focus days such as European day of languages.
We have a structured progression of language learning skills throughout Key Stage 2 where children are are supported to:
• speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity
• write at varying length for different purposes using a variety of grammatical structures
• develop an appreciation of French culture through celebrating it via whole school
French Days
• reflect on their own learning at the end of each unit
Evidence of writing, singing and oracy will be stored within an online folder to ensure
standards can be monitored and our Twitter page will share the success of our
children. Knowledge is assessed through songs, recorded conversations, written
activities and live feedback within the lessons.
